Hi, my name is Nicola, I am veterinarian and the owner of the farm. I live here with my two kids that are Nicolò, male 12 yo and Giulia female (10 yo). She is the one chasing the puppies in the photo, I am the other one. My parents bought the house with the land since 20 years, after I moved here from Milan and started to rebuild the house and set up the farm. The farm is 85 hectars, 35 of grazing fields and 50 of mediterranean forest. It faces the mediterranean coast at an height of 200 meters and 10km from the sea. The climate is amazing with mild winters and windy summers, there are orange trees in the garden. I had my vet practice on studfarms all around Tuscany till a few years ago but now my place is taking maybe 80% of my working time. We provide to racehorse breeders services of farming and breeding. Some mares come to the farm just in spring for foaling and beeing inseminated. 25 mares are resident all year and kept outside on grazing with their offsprings, 20 foals and 20 yearlings. These last live the farm to the auction or to the training centers the october of their second year of life. About horse breeding the buisy periods are from january to may for foalings, from february to june for inseminations and semen collection ( we manage one or more stallions every breeding season), from july to september for Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Обычная таблица"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} yearlings handling and preparation. On the side of horse farming there are two other minor activities that are oil production and Golden Retrievers. There are 230 olive trees spread in the horse’s paddocks, from wich we produce olive oil in a range of 150 to 500 liters every season. Harvesting time is october/november, but the trees need a lot of care and should be trimmed in march/april as well. Golden Retrievers are now just few, and we don’have more than 2 litters every year, but is growing the request to host dogs in our kennels during summer holidays and I guess that in the future this activity will improve. The staff is composed by me ( scanning, visiting, inseminating but also paper works and administration) Alexandra, polish, breeding manager and Tommaso, farm manager. They live on site at the first floor of the big stone house that you can see on the photos. Tommaso has his own family and his wife, Nina, is my house keeper . I live with the kids at the ground floor and the photo you see is taken from the living room that was a stable in the past. Helpers can work with Alex assisting visits, feeding, moving horses, macking out, with Tommaso on olive program, fencing, carpentry, land care, forestry or with me, cooking, gardening, driving and dog caring when needed. Accomodation can be in a personal or shared room with private bathroom or in a small cute stone bungalow just outside the main house; it depends from length of staying, number of helpers (ideally for me is one, maximum two at a time) and kind of help choosed. I cook for the kids and myself and for helpers and wwoofers when we have, but to be honest for me it’s a little hard and I appreciate any kind of cooperation about meal preparation and reordering. Internet is not routinely provided at the farm as I connect through my cellular phone. You can check emails and do fast search but please not browse as a spending time activity. I cook mediterranean and hopefully healthy, but we are not strictly biolgycal. If there is any special needing helpers can buy their own stuff and use a personal fridge. I am a pipe smoker and smokers are welcome when they don’t throw filters on the floor that is something I really hate. I prefer to host helpers for periods not shorter than two weeks. About transport, if you are fit enough, there are two bikes available for short trips; Cecina, the biggest commercial town nearby is at 20kms (45 minutes biking). Casino di Terra is a small village at 7kms on the main way between Cecina and Volterra; there are 5 restaurants (it’s a very touristic area this) one gas station, one post office, two bars, one haircutter
